Unit 1 Journey Challenges

To clarify in case there is any confusion: ALL FOUR challenges are due on Oct. 7th.

Who Am I Challenge - “Who Am I?”

On Wednesday*, you and a partner explored your identities through the Proust Questionnaire. Without repeating your responses, use the interview to help you answer a question that generations of humans have pondered:

“Who Am I?”

What to put in the journal: Your super-creative response, be it written, visual, performance, photographic, sculptural, culinary or anything else you can think of.

*If you missed this, fear not! You can still answer the question without the interview. Want the interview questions? E-mail us!

Pay It Forward Challenge“You’re Beautiful!”

Step One: Brainstorm a list of ten people you think are beautiful. Not just superficially or physically beautiful, but for anything from their deeds and actions to their heart and soul.

Step Two: Your job now is to have a face-to-face conversation with each of these people to tell them why you think they are beautiful. Once you have had your conversation, challenge each person to tell another ten that they are beautiful, so hundreds and thousands of people get to hear why they are so lovely. (Don't use this exercise to insult or belittle anyone!)

Step Three: Check back in with your ten to see how they did with their list. How far did the experiment go?

What to put in the journal: Tell us about your ten picks, use photos (drawings even) of each person and explain what is beautiful about them. How did the conversations go (awkward? humiliating? easy? fun? romantic?), and then later, how did the follow-up conversations go? If you went somewhere to talk, use mementos to remember the event.

Wild Card / RAK Challenge

This one is up to you. Humanities is centered around creative social experiences for the many, so for your Wild Card: CREATE, ORGANIZE, GROW AS A HUMAN BEING. We want you to have fun and express yourself. This is your chance to try something new, be adventurous, and get credit for it. (Examples: Try a new cuisine, have a breakdancing tournament in your basement, invite the girls over for a slumber party and have an Audrey Hepburn film marathon.)

or

Do a Random Act of Kindness. The master of RAKs is Secret Agent L, but more ideas can be found at SSSSH!’s website or UMadeMyDay. The idea is that by doing something nice for another human being, we can make the world a better place. Be creative, DO NOT spend anything more than $5, and make a meaningful impact on someone's life.

What to put in your journal: Whether you choose to do a Wild Card or a RAK, document what you did as best as you can. Use photographs, written reflection, video, artistic interpretations, mementos and objects to show us what happened, who was there, how it got organized, and what it meant to you and the others you influenced.

Facebook Forum

Whether it's about Self, Beauty, Ego or not, share something cultural with the Humanities world at large. Did you just read a news article that needs to be shared? Find a website you think could use a few more hits? How about a song you can't get out of your head or a video that's making you chuckle. Maybe it's something you made on your own that's ready for an audience. Post at least one thing on the wall for us to enjoy.
