NYC TRIP: The Whitney and the High Line

Steps to making your journals!

1.) Obtain:  - 10 pages of watercolor paper
                   - 16 pages of other paper (graph paper or printer paper)

2.) Fold all paper in half to the best of your ability.

3.) Draw small lines with pencil on the crease of one watercolor page at:
                 - 1.5 inches
                 -  4.5 inches
                 -  7.5 inches

4.) An easy way to draw small lines in the proper area of the crease for each page is to line up pages (as pictured below) and use a ruler to mark the rest of the pages.

5.) Hole punch what would look to be "half holes" on the crease of each page.

6.) Choose a color of yarn or string and tie a large knot on one end.

7.) Sew the string through the top hole, middle hole, and bottom hole and alternate sewing from back to front. (This stitch is called a saddle stitch.)

8.) Once you have finished sewing, leave a little extra string to tie a knot to an area of the threaded string.

9.) Write your name nice and tiny in pencil on the front of your book.

Humanities Technology Policy

Tech Day:

• Green Cell Phone Icon on board

• Device should be used for class - research, surveys, teacher led games etc.
• One earbud if needed

Non-Tech Day:

• Red cell phone icon on board
• As students enter the classroom, place it in the shoe organizer based on your assigned number
• Remove the numbered card and place on the teacher’s desk
• Attendance will be taken for each class period on a Non-Tech Day in this manner. If a student is in class but has neglected to put their electronic device in the shoe organizer, they will be marked absent.

Humanities is a class where what you get out of it depends entirely on what you put into it.

Consequences: Students who ignore this policy will be referred to their grade level administrator, and may be removed from Humanities! Please don’t let that happen!

What you will need...

To take this class, you will need your wits, your creativity and a few supplies, namely:

1. Pen and/or Pencil!

Whatever your preferred writing implement, bring it every day, no matter what. There are lots of times when we will be playing and using art supplies, but nothing beats these classics, even when you're a high school senior. Promise.


2. Your Journal! (No need to purchase one.)

In this class you will have the opportunity to practice the art of bookmaking. Yes this means you will be hand-building and designing your very own journal! How exciting! With this journal you will record your observations, thoughts, and experiences as a means of documenting your time here with us. Please be sure to bring your journal to class with you each day. There are times where you may be required to take the journal home with you to complete an assignment, so please be sure to come to class prepared with your journal in hand.

3. Your Brain! (Again, no need to purchase one, just be sure not to forget it at home!)

What is Humanities?

Over the history of mankind, human beings have been fascinated with the world around them. Generally speaking, the Humanities investigate the expressions of the human mind. This class breaks our reality into little digestible bites. Each unit of study follows a theme that has inspired generations of thinkers and creators, and then asks what you think and how you are inspired. 

Our Humanities class is divided into three concentrations:

1. Visual Arts - Where we'll focus on the way people have interpreted their world into physical objects like paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings.

2. Performing Arts - Where the focus shifts to the way people have been inspired to act, dance, sing, and make music.

3. Social Sciences - Where the investigation continues into how people interpret their world through human interaction, societal beliefs, philosophy, and culture.

The Humanities tell us where we have been and help us envision where we are going.
